People ask me all the time, which do I like better hair or makeup?
The answer is both! Hair or makeup, my job is done when my client starts glowing from the inside. I didn't aspire to be a hair and makeup artist but what has kept me going is the feeling I get, when my client looks in the mirror with confidence.
I didn't realize when I walked into Macy's in 2004 with my old co-worker that my life would be changed forever. My friend wanted to get her makeup done at MAC Cosmetics. Being the daring and fun-loving 19 year old I was, I decided to upgrade her makeup myself and tried to do her eyeliner, while we waited for her appointment. I royally messed her up!!! I asked the lady working if she had anything to clean up the mess I made.
To my luck the nice lady working the counter that day was the manager. Believe it or not, she asked me to tryout to work there. I knew nothing and denied the opportunity at first. My friend kicked me and said, "Go for it!". And I decided to take the job. I learned to do makeup while I worked and continue to learn, grow and challenge myself, to this day.
My first experience working on-location on a team was for the Miss Vietnam Global 2007, beauty pageant. It was an amazing week-long experience which happened to fall on my birthday. My client flew me and three of my friend's out to help her do hair and makeup for the beauty pageant contestants. I learned that there was so much more to the beauty industry than just working at a counter.
I knew I wanted more.
Just after, I enrolled in the San Jose City College Cosmetology Program. MAC wouldn't accept my part-time employment so I kept a float freelancing and doing weddings on weekends. I had the privilege to work very closely with a star in the industry. My cousin, Armando Sarabia of Get Your Do Up. I'm proud to have worked with him throughout the years and I am more proud to have him on my team today!
After working in a salon for a number of years, I found traveling, makeup and styling outside of the salon was my true passion. From doing fashion shows locally to beauty pageants nationally and weddings internationally, who could blame me? I love what I do!
Today I take my client's for hair AND makeup at my own studio in San Jose, CA and on-location of course. I'm proud to have a team that I love and respect with all my heart. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today. Together we serve client's in-studio and on-location and continue to learn, grow and love life passionately doing what we do best.
